Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter Trailer

After receiving critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his last film First Reformed, there has been a lot of anticipation for Paul Schrader’s next film The Card Counter. The movie stars Oscar Isaac as a gambler with a dark past who teams up with a young poker player (Tye Sheridan) to seek revenge on a mutual enemy (Willem Dafoe). Tiffany Haddish also appears in a rare dramatic role and Martin Scorsese is executive producing although he is probably just lending his name for marketing purposes. That being said, this first trailer doesn’t make it look like much more than just another generic VOD thriller, so here’s hoping the final product surpasses those expectations. The Card Counter hits theatres on Sept. 10th; check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

“another generic VOD thriller”? The editorializing with this guy!

    Always. You disagree?

  • RockJoker

It does look bland and cheap.

I’d say it looks like a genre Las Vegas / gambling movie, because it is. :) I don’t know that Schrader has the dynamic camera moves of Scorsese or Soderbergh, but he can be a pretty good writer. Here’s hoping.
