After announcing a recent release date change that also shifted Dune back by a few weeks, Warner Brothers has released the first trailer for David Chase’s upcoming prequel to his groundbreaking HBO series The Sopranos. Back when the project was initially announced it seemed like it would be only loosely connected to the TV series and would instead explore Newark in the ’60s and ’70s against the backdrop of racial tensions. As it turns out, The Many Saints of Newark does also feature a young Tony Soprano with James Gandolfini’s son Michael playing the role. Although feature film sequels to beloved TV shows are hit and miss affairs, this one definitely looks like it has the potential to be great. The Many Saints of Newark also stars Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michela De Rossi, Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga and it is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Terminator Genisys). The movie hits theatres and HBO Max on Oct. 1st; check out the first trailer after the jump and see what you think.
