With the extended free Apple TV+ trial set to expire for initial subscribers next month, you would think Apple would be planning to drop some big original shows right about now. While they do have the second season of Ted Lasso debuting on July 23rd, the only new series arriving next month (so far) is Schmigadoon!, a musical comedy from Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio (Despicable Me) with a unique premise. Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key play a couple on a backpacking trip who stumble upon a magical town where everyone acts like they are stuck in a Golden Age musical. The supporting cast includes Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski, Ann Harada and Martin Short. Some potential comparisons that come to mind include WandaVision and Disney’s Enchanted and, as it turns out, Barry Sonnenfeld (who was a producer on Enchanted) directs all six episodes. Schmigadoon! arrives on Apple TV+ on July 16th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
