After a few years of fumbling around trying to decide what should be next for the Transformers movie franchise, this week Paramount has officially announced the next installment in the series. The movie will be called Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and, as previously rumoured, it will introduce characters from the ’90s CG-animated series Beast Wars featuring robots that can transform into prehistoric animals. The movie will also be set in the ’90s (1994 specifically) and will be directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II). Here’s what he had to say about the project:
“By the time I was a teenager Beast Wars came out. I was a part of that interesting sort of gap where I was able to know the Transformers, know G1, know G2 even, but then on top of that, dive into Beast Wars. I remember they were trying something funky with the CGI and all that stuff. And we were all like, what is this? It was right on a break into like high school. I’m just excited. You can see the kid in me is like, that’s what brought me to the project. It’s a chance to imagine on a different level, right? And like, dream. So that’s what Transformers really means to me. Dealing with robots, dealing with humans, and creating that bond … it’s all about the emotion and it’s all about where we can take our new characters.”
Meanwhile, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura promised that it would be “a spectacle story … in the tradition of the Bay films”, perhaps trying to reassure fans who were disappointed by the smaller scale of 2018’s Bumblebee. Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) will star, while Peter Cullen once again returns to voice Optimus Prime, who will appear in his classic G1 form. The movie will largely focus on factions other than the Autobots and Decepticons, however, shifting to the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons instead. Scourge will be the primary villain with other new characters confirmed for the new movie set to include Arcee, Mirage, Nighbird, Rhinox, Airazor and Optimus Primal. Are you looking forward to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts?
