NBC Drops 2022 Golden Globes While HFPA Addresses Diversity Problem

After a major backlash surrounding the Golden Globes earlier this year, it looks like next year’s Golden Globes awards ceremony will not be airing on NBC. The organization behind the Golden Globes, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, came under fire earlier this year when it was revealed that out of their current 86 members, not a single one was black. Since then they have promised a 50% increase in membership over the next 18 months and various other steps to improve diversity, although there are doubts about whether this will actually address the issue. Netflix and Amazon decided to boycott the HFPA until they can demonstrate meaningful change and now NBCUniversal is standing alongside them, opting not to air the 2022 Golden Globes. Here is the statement released by NBC:

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

It is unclear if they will still have to pay the HFPA their $60 million annual fee for the rights to air the awards show (they inked a new 8-year deal with Dick Clark Productions back in 2018). It is also unclear if the Golden Globes will still happen next year even if they are not on TV. The HFPA has responded by releasing a timeline for their proposed changes. At this point, I don’t think anyone is surprised that the credibility of the Golden Globes has once again been called into question. Even the Oscars have struggled to remain relevant, but by comparison the Globes have been seen as a bit of a joke for many years now. Do you think the Golden Globes are on the verge of being cancelled for good?
