With 2016’s Elle, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven proved that at the age of 78 he still had plenty of provocative stories left to tell on the big screen and now this year he will return with a new movie playing in competition at Cannes. Alas, this is not his Jesus of Nazareth movie but it is a religious film called Benedetta, perhaps more easily summarized as an erotic lesbian nun romance. It seems destined to get some people very riled up and yet it is based on a true story and the non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. The story takes place in late 15th century Tuscany where a young woman joins a convent and starts a love affair with another woman while also suffering from disturbing visions. Benedetta stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson and Daphne Patakia and it hits theatres in France on July 9th; check out the official trailer after the jump and see what you think.
