Next Star Trek Movie Back in the Works with a New Writer

Paramount has been moving at warp speed when it comes to generating new Star Trek shows on TV from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks to the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy and several other spin-offs as well. In the meantime, however, the feature film franchise has remained on life support as the studio has been seemingly unable to come up with an acceptable follow-up to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. Last we heard, Noah Hawley (Fargo) was developing a movie that would not involve Chris Pine and crew, but last summer it was put on hold indefinitely. Now we are hearing that there is a new project being hatched by a writer and producer from Star Trek: Discovery. Hit the jump for more info.
According to Deadline, Kalinda Vazquez has been hired to write a new Star Trek movie for Paramount and Bad Robot Productions. Vazquez has previously written for Star Trek: Discovery as well as several other shows including Fear the Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time and Runaways. Plot details are currently unknown but it is said to be an original movie and although J.J. Abrams is producing it remains unclear if it will be set in the Kelvin timeline.
Vazquez is apparently the first female screenwriter to tackle Star Trek on the big screen, which is interesting considering that S.J. Clarkson was supposed to be the first female director back when Paramount was still working on a direct follow-up to Star Trek Beyond. It does not seem likely that Clarkson is involved in this project, however. Vazquez is also working on an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s Barrier, a TV series based on Roger Zelazny’s Roadmarks with George R.R. Martin, and is penning the Marvel comic book series America Chavez: Made in the U.S.A.. Meanwhile Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated Star Trek script is still being talked about but does not seem to be in the immediate future. Are you hoping for a continuation of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek on the big screen or is it time for a complete reboot?
