Regarding Minari’s depiction of the South, I’ve read/heard some comments from people from the South praising the movie in that respect. A few of them even said the Will Patton character rang true. I had the same initial misgivings as Frank, but ultimately I felt he was a well-handled and performed character.

In subtle ways, I think the movie does some unexpected things. There were a few moments, especially one involving the father of David’s friend, where I thought overt, ugly racism was going to be displayed, but it never came. The aftermath of an event around the middle of the film involving the grandmother is handled in much quicker fashion than I was expecting as well.

If you guys are thinking about reviewing Raya and the Last Dragon, I recommend skipping that animated movie, which is bound to be underwhelming, and go with On-Gaku: Our Sound. It’s an indie anime that got some well-deserved Annie nominations this week, and it doesn’t fit into the typical mold the average person might think of when it comes to anime.

Totally agreed about the racism, forgot to mention that. It felt like it was going to happen eventually but they never went there aside from some somewhat innocent stuff amongst the kids.

And I was looking to check out On-Gaku this weekend but apparently it’s not out until Tuesday.
