Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Star in Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV Series

Doug Liman’s action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith was one of the biggest hits of 2005, teaming Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married spies trying to kill each other back when star power actually meant something. Since then there have been a couple of attempts to remake or continue the concept. In 2007, Liman directed a pilot for a Mr. & Mrs. Smith spin-off series starring Martin Henderson and Jordana Brewster but it did not get picked up. The 2016 film Keeping Up with the Joneses was also apparently developed as a prequel although the connections were later dropped. Now we are hearing that Amazon is taking a shot at a new TV adaptation with Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are attached to star. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

The news was announced via Instagram with both Glover and Waller-Bridge playfully revealing their collaboration together. They will both star in and executive produce the show, which is coming to Amazon in 2022, and Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo) will act as showrunner. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke had this to say:

“Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team. ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency.”

Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge previously worked together on Solo: A Star Wars Story where they played Lando Calrissian and L3-37 respectively, showcasing some comedic chemistry. They have both worked with Amazon before as well; Waller-Bridge with her Emmy-winning series Fleabag and Glover with his musical film Guava Island. The project also came about partially due to Waller-Bridge’s overall deal with Amazon. Are you looking forward to a new version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith?

No idea why anyone suggested this might be a good idea. Would’ve thought both could find something more interesting to do.
