After the success of The Invisible Man, Universal has wasted no time lining up a lot more remakes of their Universal Monster properties. At last count, there were at least 10 different projects in development and the fact that they have abandoned the shared universe approach and given filmmakers more freedom seems to be attracting some interesting directors to the party. This week we have another surprising one to add to the list: Nomadland director Chloe Zhao. Having already been recruited by Marvel to direct Eternals, she is now on board to helm a new Dracula movie for Universal as well. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, Chloe Zhao will write, direct and produce a new movie based on Dracula for Universal Pictures. The movie is being described as “an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western” that deals with “themes of being on society’s fringes.” Zhao is also working on a biopic about Bass Reeves, the first black U.S. Marshall, for Amazon Studios.
There are several other Dracula-related projects in the works including one set up at Blumhouse with Karyn Kusama attached to direct. Dexter Fletcher is also directing a movie about Dracula’s henchman Renfield and Julius Avery is working on a Van Helsing movie. None of these appear to be directly connected. Are you looking forward to seeing Chloe Zhao’s take on Dracula?
