In news that will surprise absolutely no one, we are hearing this week that executives at HBO Max are in the very early stages of putting together a live-action Harry Potter TV series. The property remains one of the most valuable in the Warner Brothers catalogue, and although the Wizarding World is already being expanded via the Fantastic Beasts series of films, the recent backlash to both Johnny Depp and JK Rowling seems to have tempered fan enthusiasm somewhat. Television is clearly the next most logical format for them to explore although it is still too early to tell if this is actually happening. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to THR, sources claim that HBO execs have “engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television.” Things are still very much at an exploratory stage and no writers or actors are currently attached. It is also unclear just how much involvement JK Rowling might have although at the very least she would have to approve the idea in order for it to move forward.
HBO Max and Warner Brothers both issued a statement denying that a Harry Potter series is currently in development, although given the how early it is in the process, that is probably technically true. Still, the folks at Warners seem to be pulling out all the stops in order to build up original content at HBO Max, even if it means alienating half of Hollywood. At this point a TV series set in the Wizarding World seems all but inevitable. What would you like to see in a Harry Potter TV series?
