New Van Helsing Movie Gets Overlord Director, James Wan to Produce

Yet another new Universal monster movie is in development, this time revolving around the most famous vampire hunter of all. It was announced back in March that James Wan was producing a new monster movie for Universal, possibly a loose remake of Frankenstein, although details were fairly slim. That one was a collaboration with Robbie Thompson (Supernatural), but now we are hearing that Wan is adding a second Universal monster movie to his plate with Overlord director Julius Avery on board to direct. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to Deadline, Julius Avery is attached to direct “an original horror/thriller inspired by the studio’s classic monster legacy set in the world of Van Helsing.” Avery also is rewriting the script with Eric Pearson (Black Widow, Godzilla vs. Kong) having penned the initial draft. James Wan is producing through his Atomic Monster banner.
Avery’s next movie is the Sylvester Stallone superhero flick Samaritan, but Overlord was well-received despite being considered a bit of a disappointment commercially. In particular, it seemed to go over well with genre fans although it is unclear if he would take a similar R-rated approach with this project. The last major Van Helsing movie was the 2004 Stephen Sommers film starring Hugh Jackman… unless of course you count the 2009 comedy Stan Helsing.
