Despite his abundance of charm and wit, George Clooney’s efforts as a director over the past two decades have tended to yield mixed results. His last film, Suburbicon, gave some of the worst reviews of his career but he is back this year with an original movie for Netflix that finds him tackling science-fiction for the first time. The Midnight Sky is based on the book Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton and it stars Clooney as a scientist living in the Arctic who must attempt to stop a group of astronauts from returning to Earth following a global catastrophe. It appears to be more of a quiet drama than an effects-driven action movie, but Netflix obviously must think it has some mainstream appeal since they are giving it a release date similar to the one they gave Bird Box a few years ago. The Midnight Sky co-stars Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo and Demián Bichir and it arrives on Netflix on Dec. 23rd; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
