Scarlett Johansson to Star in New Bride of Frankenstein Movie

After the success of The Invisible Man, Universal is continuing to push forward with reinventions of several other classic Universal monsters including Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein. Another project that remains in the works as a holdover from the Dark Universe is Bride of Frankenstein, which David Koepp wrote and Bill Condon was originally attached to direct. Although that project has yet to find a new director, we are now hearing that a different competing project is being set up over at A24. Scarlett Johansson is attached to star with Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Gloria) on board to direct. Johannson had this to say:

“It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone. Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.”

The log line for the project, simply titled Bride, is as follows:

“A woman created to be an ideal wife — the singular obsession of a brilliant entrepreneur — rejects her creator, and is forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. It is on the run that she finds her true identity, her surprising power, and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.”

The script is being written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Orange is the New Black), who also wrote the upcoming Ryan Gosling version of Wolfman. Strangely, although Wolfman is set up at Universal, the studio does not appear to be involved in this one (the Universal Monster characters are all in the public domain). This is the latest collaboration between A24 and Apple, which means it will be coming to Apple TV+ at some point. Are you looking forward to seeing Scarlett Johansson as the Bride of Frankenstein?
