Huh… I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Following up on recent DC announcements that multiple Batman actors are being lined up to reprise their roles in The Flash, Marvel and Sony seem to be cooking up a multiverse strategy of their own. Before Spider-Man: Far From Home hit theatres, trailers for the movie implied that Mysterio had come from another version of Earth, leading to speculation about a possible Marvel multiverse. While that didn’t quite pan out, that hasn’t stopped Kevin Feige from dropping hints, particularly with regards to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (I mean, it’s right there in the title). Now it looks like Jamie Foxx is coming back to play Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a movie from a completely different continuity. But what does it all mean?
According to THR, Jamie Foxx is in final talks to play Electro in Sony’s next Spider-Man movie. Tom Holland will play Peter Parker / Spider-Man while Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are all expected to return as well. Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home, is also attached to helm the follow-up.
We should have known weird things were afoot when J.K. Simmons returned as J. Jonah Jameson in a Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credit scene, having played the character in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies. The next Spider-Man movie is scheduled to hit theatres on Nov. 5th, 2021, which at this point means it might set things up for a big payoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is slated for March 2022. Then again, release dates are all pretty tentative these days, so who knows? If they wanted to get really crazy, they could also bring Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse into the mix as well, combining both live-action and animation. Are you looking forward to seeing more overlap between Sony’s Spider-Man movies and the MCU?
