Following up on his well-received western mini-series Godless, writer-director Scott Frank (The Lookout) is teaming up with Netflix for another limited series this time set in the world of competitive chess. Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) as a female chess prodigy and orphan who has been competing from the age of 8. As she continues to pursue her dream of becoming a Grandmaster, she struggles with sexism and addiction along the way. A big screen adaptation of the novel was in development for years with Heath Ledger was once planning to make it his directorial debut; that being said, this version also looks promising. The Queen’s Gambit co-stars Moses Ingram, Bill Camp, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Marielle Heller, Harry Melling and Rebecca Root and it arrives on Netflix on Oct. 23rd.
