Netflix will soon be releasing another one of this year’s Sundance hits, Kirsten Johnson’s documentary Dick Johnson is Dead. The movie won the Special Jury Award for Innovation in Nonfiction Storytelling and it finds Johnson documenting and working through her father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s by imagining and staging his death in various ridiculous ways. By building this strange meta narrative, she finds a clever and heartfelt way to collaborate with her father and immortalize him on screen forever. Kirsten Johnson is a long-time non-fiction cinematographer but she is best known for her acclaimed 2016 semi-autobiographical documentary Cameraperson. Dick Johnson is Dead arrives on Netflix on Oct. 2nd; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
