We’ve got some extremely sad and unexpected news to end the week. Chadwick Boseman, best known for playing Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, passed away yesterday after a four year battle with colon cancer. He was just 43 years old. The loss feels all the more tragic given that he had just reached a point in his career where it felt like anything was possible for him. He most recently appeared in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. Boseman’s Twitter account posted the following statement on behalf of his family:

Boseman went to Howard University where he was mentored by Phylicia Rashad, originally with his sights set on writing and directing. After landing some early TV roles, in 2008 he landed a recurring role on Lincoln Heights and his first feature film role in The Express. Everything changed in 2013 after he scored the lead role as Jackie Robinson in 42 and soon after that he played James Brown in Get On Up as well.

Marvel cast him as T’Challa / Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War and a couple of years later he headlined the 2018 film Black Panther, which went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of all time and earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award. The impact of the film within Hollywood and around the world was immense. Boseman was expected to reprise the role in Black Panther 2 but many are now wondering if they will retire the character. His final performance will be in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of the August Wilson play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. What are your favourite Chadwick Boseman movies?
