Tron 3 Gets a New Director

Is Disney once again getting ready to return to The Grid? There have been rumours about the possibility of another Tron movie ever since Tron: Legacy hit theatres back in 2010. The movie made $400 million worldwide on a $170 million budget, which seems okay on the surface but it was ultimately considered a flop. Back in 2015, it was being reported that Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde had signed on for a sequel and that director Joseph Kosinski was set to return but then it was killed after Disney execs got cold feet. A few years later, Jared Leto seemed to get involved, becoming attached to star as the project continued to develop quietly in the background. Now this week a director appears to be locked in. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Deadline, Garth Davis will direct Tron 3 (rumoured to be called Tron: Destiny) for Disney. Davis is best known for the Oscar-nominated 2016 film Lion but he also directed four episodes of the Jane Campion series Top of the Lake plus the Biblical drama Mary Magdalene starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. Although he has yet to tackle any big budget effects-driven films, he is said to have petitioned hard for the job and eventually won over execs.

Jared Leto is still attached to star (rumoured to be playing a character named Ares) and he will also produce. The latest draft of the script was written by Jesse Wigutow, who wrote The Crow reboot and also an upcoming adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s sci-fi comic book series Descender. Disney is making it a high priority to bring Daft Punk back to do the score but it is currently unclear if any of the Tron: Legacy cast members are still expected to return. Do you have high hopes for Tron 3?

High hopes from me as I love the eye candy. Every time I visit the Atlas in No Man’s Sky – it’s like entering the Tron universe.
