Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic put most major blockbuster movies on hold, it has also slowed down development on future blockbusters as well. Case in point: it feels like it has been a really long time since we’ve had any news or updates on upcoming Marvel movies (other than to announce delays, of course). Fortunately, last week some relatively big news finally dropped on that front. We are hearing that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not be returning to direct their upcoming Captain Marvel sequel and instead they will be passing the baton to a new filmmaker. According to Deadline, Nia DaCosta will direct Captain Marvel 2 for Marvel Studios and Disney. DaCosta co-wrote and directed the upcoming Candyman reboot, which is being produced by Jordan Peele, plus she also directed an indie crime thriller called Little Woods. Megan McDonnell, a writer on the upcoming MCU series WandaVision, is writing the script.

Candyman is currently scheduled to hit theatres on October 16th and although the general public has yet to see it, it seems like there is a good chance it was a factor in DaCosta landing the gig. It is unclear why Boden and Fleck are not returning and whether it was their choice but it has been rumoured that they may be taking on one of Marvel’s Disney+ shows instead. It is possible that the upcoming Ms. Marvel TV show could be connected to Captain Marvel and there is speculation that the character might appear in the MCU elsewhere before getting her own show.
