After premiering the first trailer for his upcoming movie Killroy Was Here over the weekend, Kevin Smith has unveiled another big announcement. He is reportedly teaming up with a company called WildBrain to produce a Green Hornet animated series and it sounds like it will be at least partially based on his comic book run for Dynamite Entertainment from a decade ago. This will be a contemporary update that revolves around Green Hornet’s son and Kato’s daughter taking up the mantle and fighting crime in Century City. Smith had this to say about the announcement:
“It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters. We’ll be telling a tale of two Hornets – past and future – that spans generations and draws inspiration from a lifetime spent watching classic cartoons and amazing animation like Batman: The Animated Series, Heavy Metal, and Super Friends. I can’t believe WildBrain gave me this job and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to extend my childhood a little longer.”
The project is not currently set up at a network but will soon be shopped around to various broadcasters and streaming services. Smith is already working on a Masters of the Universe animated series for Netflix, which is expected to arrive next year. This isn’t the only Green Hornet project in development, however, as Gavin O’Connor signed on to direct a new Green Hornet live-action movie a few years ago although we haven’t had any updates on that recently. Would you be excited to see a Green Hornet animated series?
