More COVID-19 Delays: Tenet, Mulan, Avatar and Star Wars Sequels

It may not be surprising, but we’ve had another week of shifting release dates in Hollywood with COVID-19 far from under control across the U.S. and in several other parts of the world right now. Earlier in the week, Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan were reluctantly forced to delay Tenet once again, pulling it from the release calendar completely. The movie was supposed to hit theatres on August 12th but a 2020 release date is still expected, now with the added possibility of an international release before it arrives in North America. Following that announcement, Disney also decided to delay Mulan without setting a new date. In addition, they have rescheduled quite a few other upcoming releases. The (mostly) complete list of new dates is as follows:

  • Tenet – moves from Aug. 12, 2020 to TBD
  • Bill & Ted Face the Music – moves from Aug. 28, 2020 to Sept. 1, 2020
  • Unhinged – moves from July 31, 2020 to TBD
  • Mulan – moves from Aug. 21, 2020 to TBD
  • The Broken Hearts Gallery – moves from Aug. 7, 2020 to TBD
  • The French Dispatch – moves from Oct. 16, 2020 to TBD
  • The Last Duel – moves from Dec. 25, 2020 to Oct. 15, 2021
  • Death on the Nile – moves from Oct. 9, 2020 to Oct. 23, 2020
  • Antlers – moves from TBD to Feb. 19, 2021
  • Avatar 2 – moves from Dec. 17, 2021 to Dec. 16, 2022
  • Avatar 3 – moves from Dec. 22, 2023 to Dec. 20, 2024
  • Avatar 4 – moves from Dec. 19, 2025 to Dec. 18, 2026
  • Avatar 5 – moves from Dec. 17, 2027 to Dec. 22, 2028
  • Untitled Star Wars Film – moves from Dec. 16, 2022 to Dec. 22, 2023
  • Untitled Star Wars Film – moves from Dec. 20, 2024 to Dec. 19, 2025
  • Untitled Star Wars Film – moves from Dec. 18, 2026 to Dec. 17, 2027

One movie that did not get a new release date, however, is The New Mutants. During the Comic-Con@Home panel, a new trailer and the opening scene were released but the August 28th release date appeared to be set in stone… leading once again to heavy speculation that this movie will get released direct to VOD and/or Disney+. Bill & Ted Face the Music will also now be released in select theatres and on VOD simultaneously, but no other major releases have been announced for digital as of yet.
