Just one month after hearing that Ryan Gosling might star in an upcoming reboot of Universal’s The Wolf Man, the project may have found its director. At the time, it was unclear if Blumhouse would be producing the movie, but it seemed likely given that they had just successfully rebooted The Invisible Man for Universal. This week we are hearing that they have officially signed on to produce the project and they have brought with them the director of The Invisible Man, Leigh Whannell (who also happens to have a first-look deal with Blumhouse). Hit the jump for more details.
According to The Wrap, Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct an upcoming reboot of the 1941 classic The Wolf Man, simply titled Wolfman. Ryan Gosling is attached to star and will produce the film along with Jason Blum. Whannell is providing a treatment but the actual screenplay is set to be written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Orange is the New Black).
It was originally reported that the movie would draw influences from Network and Nightcrawler with Gosling playing a news anchorman who gets infected. Leigh Whannell seems like an obvious choice to direct since he did such a great job with The Invisible Man, although Cory Finley (Throughbreds, Bad Education) was also reportedly under consideration. It is one of several Universal Monster movies in development right now along with Karyn Kusama’s Dracula, Paul Feig’s Dark Army, Elizabeth Banks’ The Invisible Woman and Dexter Fletcher’s Renfield, although it is anyone’s guess which one will hit theatres first. Are you looking forward to Leigh Whannell’s Wolfman?
