Although HBO Max launched with a few original shows like Love Life and Looney Tunes Cartoons, their first original feature film won’t be arriving until next month. An American Pickle stars Seth Rogen as an immigrant who comes to America in 1920 and… falls into a giant vat of pickles. He wakes up 100 years later in modern day Brooklyn, miraculously preserved by the brine, and meets up with his great-grandson (also played by Seth Rogen). Based on the short story Sell Out by Simon Rich, it actually looks a little more heartfelt than you might expect from such a ridiculous premise. The movie is directed by Brandon Trost, who has been a cinematographer on several of Rogen’s previous comedies and also co-directed The FP. Sarah Snook co-stars. An American Pickle arrives on HBO Max on Aug. 6th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
