Tenet Delayed to the End of July, Wonder Woman 1984 Moves to October

With most movie theatres expected to reopen across the U.S. and Canada next month, it still remains to be seen whether there will be any new movies for them to show. It’s a bit of a chicken and egg problem because studios don’t want to release their big movies until they know audiences will show up, but audiences aren’t likely to show up until there are some new movies to see. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet continues to be the event film that everyone is hoping will herald the return of cinema, but at this point the hope of seeing it before the end of the summer is barely holding on by a thread. Warner Brothers announced this week that they are pushing it back two weeks and instead they will first prime moviegoers with a 10th Anniversary re-release of Inception. Several other WB movies have also received more significant delays. The full list is as follows:
- Tenet – moves from Jul. 17, 2020 to Jul. 31, 2020
- Wonder Woman 1984 – moves from Aug. 14, 2020 to Oct. 2, 2020
- Godzilla vs. Kong – moves from Nov. 20, 2020 to May 21, 2021
- Tom and Jerry – moves from Dec. 23, 2020 to Mar. 5, 2021
- The Matrix 4 – moves from Mar. 5, 2021 to Apr. 1, 2022
- The Witches – moves from Oct. 9, 2020 to TBD
- Untitled New Line Horror Film – moves from Sep. 10, 2021 to Jun. 4, 2021
With Wonder Woman 1984 moving out of August, both Bill & Ted Face the Music and the Gerard Butler action movie Greenland have moved into the Aug. 14th slot. I guess it makes sense to try and test the waters with a re-release rather than a new release, but I don’t know that the Inception re-release is going to give any sort of indication of what the turnout might be for Tenet. The big question is now whether Disney will move Mulan, since it is now scheduled to open one week before Tenet. Do you see yourself going to the theatre to see any new movies if they actually get released this summer?
