After the success of The Invisible Man earlier this year, Universal has been continuing to put more monster movies into development. They have ditched the shared universe idea and seem to be planning each one as a standalone movie; some are direct reboots of classic monster movies while others fall more into the category of spin-offs or original concepts. Most recently, Karyn Kusama was hired to direct a Dracula reboot, and now it appears The Wolfman is also getting a reboot with Ryan Gosling attached to star. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Universal is setting up a new version of The Wolfman as a starring vehicle for Ryan Gosling. The script was written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Orange is the New Black), based on a pitch by Gosling himself. No director has been chosen as of yet but Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds, Bad Education) is said to be on the shortlist of filmmakers under consideration.
Not much is known about the plot of the reboot thus far but THR is reporting that Gosling will play an anchorman who gets “infected” and that the script “evokes Network (1976) and Nightcrawler (2014).” It is unclear what the proposed budget for the movie might be or if it is being produced in collaboration with Blumhouse. The last person to play The Wolfman was Benicio Del Toro in the 2010 Joe Johnston film which was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Do you think Ryan Gosling would make a good Wolfman?
