With both Venom 2 and Morbius delayed until next year, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see how the next couple of entries in Sony’s expanding Spider-Man universe are received. In the meantime, however, the studio is continuing to mine Spider-Man for more peripheral characters as as they put several other spin-offs in development. Last week, Variety reported that S.J Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) had been hired to develop and possibly direct a female-centric Spider-Man spin-off, widely believed to be the previously announced Madame Web movie. In addition, we are also seeing some movement on a potential Jackpot movie. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Deadline, Marc Guggenheim will pen the script for Jackpot, an upcoming movie that revolves around a scientist and mom turned superhuman crimefighter who is also a friend to Spider-Man. Guggenheim has written issues of the comic himself but is best known as the writer, producer and co-creator of the DC TV shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the 2011 movie Green Lantern.
Jackpot first appeared in a Free Comic Book Day comic “Spider-Man: Swing Shift” by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez in 2007 before eventually getting her own mini-series in 2010. This will join several other Spider-Man spin-offs already in development including Nightwatch, Silk, Kraven the Hunter and possibly even a solo Mysterio movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Of course, if they expect all of these movies to have the same success as Venom, they might be in for a surprise, because these characters are nowhere near as recognizable.
