Nearly five years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, we are finally starting to see signs of life on the next Mad Max installment. We’ve been hearing for a while now that George Miller has plans for at least two more movies, one called Mad Max: The Wasteland and another untitled spin-off focusing on Imperator Furiosa. Unfortunately, a legal battle between George Miller and Warner Brothers sidetracked both projects for a couple of years. Now that the dust has apparently settled, it sounds like the Furiosa project will be moving forward, but we are hearing it is a prequel and Charlize Theron won’t be returning to reprise her role. Here’s what Miller recently had to say about the choice to cast a younger actor instead:
“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”
News about the project moving forward came out of a recent oral history on the making of Mad Max: Fury Road in The New York Times. Variety previously reported that Miller had been holding Skype auditions for the role of Furiosa with Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) among the candidates and THR is also saying that Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) is on the shortlist. Miller is hoping to shoot the next Mad Max movie in 2021, after he finishes his upcoming drama Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Are you looking forward to a Furiosa prequel?
