With the final episode of HBO’s Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children airing this past weekend, the network has also released a trailer for their next high-profile true crime documentary series. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is based on the book by the late Michelle McNamara and it follows her five-year search for the Golden State Killer, a serial rapist and murderer that had been active in Northern California in the ’70s and ’80s but was never caught. McNamara died suddenly in 2016 while completing the book but her husband, Patton Oswalt, finished it with the help of crime writer Paul Haynes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen. McNamara’s work helped reopen the case and led to an arrest in 2018. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is directed by Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?) and features excerpts from McNamara’s book read by Amy Ryan. The six-part series premieres on HBO on June 28th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
