Over the weekend, we heard that the Chris Hemsworth action movie Extraction is on track to be Netflix’s biggest premiere ever (they are saying it will be watched by an estimated 90 million households in the first 4 weeks, which puts it ahead of both 6 Underground and Bird Box). With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the streaming service is already in the process of setting up a sequel. Given the somewhat ambiguous ending of the movie, however, it is unclear where the story might go next. This week Joe Russo confirmed that he will be writing the follow-up but he also hinted that it could be either a sequel or a prequel:
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
Director Sam Hargrave is expected to return although there is no deal in place just yet. There is also no deal for Chris Hemsworth but his involvement is said to be dependent on the script. The Russo Brothers have plenty of other projects in development through their AGBO production company right now including the upcoming Tom Holland film Cherry, the recently announced Hercules movie at Disney and a Battle of the Planets movie. At the moment it is unclear where this one might fit in. Are you game for an Extraction sequel?
