In a move that will surprise absolutely no one, Disney is in the process of setting up yet another live-action remake of one of their animated films. This time around it is the 1997 film Hercules that will be getting revisited, and although it is a story that lends itself well to live-action, it is also a story that has been told via live-action many times before. What will Disney bring to the table that will make this version fresh and exciting? Well, for one, they are recruiting Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing team behind several of Marvel’s biggest movies including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, to produce. Hit the jump to find out what else we know.
According to THR, Joe and Anthony Russo are teaming with Disney to produce a Hercules remake through their AGBO banner. Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) will write the script. No word yet on who will direct but we are hearing that The Russos will not direct it themselves.
A pair of live-action Hercules movies were released as recently as 2014 with Dwayne Johnson starring in one and Kellan Lutz starring in the other. Fans have already started “dream casting” the upcoming Disney version with some petitioning for Ariana Grande to play Megara after she performed the song “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” on The Disney Family Singalong. That being said, it seems unlikely that the new version will retain the musical elements of the original. No doubt Marvel fans are also crossing their fingers that Chris Hemsworth might star (especially after leading the Russo Brothers-produced Extraction) but that is probably too obvious a choice. Are you looking forward to a live-action Hercules remake?
