After working with J.J. Abrams on several TV shows over the years including Fringe, Person of Interest and Westworld, WarnerMedia signed a massive multi-platform deal with his production company Bad Robot last year. Now they are looking to leverage that partnership with a handful of upcoming projects for their streaming service HBO Max. HBO has reportedly given production commitments to three one-hour dramas from Bad Robot Productions including a series inspired by Stephen King’s The Shining, a show based on the DC Comics supernatural superhero team Justice League Dark, and an original crime show called Duster. All three will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot’s head of television, Ben Stephenson. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Variety, Duster is a drama series co-written by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). The show will be set in the 1970s Southwest and revolves around a getaway driver who works for a growing crime syndicate.

The Shining spin-off series is tentatively titled Overlook and will focus on untold stories at the Overlook Hotel. This will be the fourth Stephen King adaptation for Bad Robot after 11.22.63, Castle Rock and the upcoming Lisey’s Story mini-series, which is coming to Apple TV+. Castle Rock executive producers Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown are rumoured to be in talks to write the show but you have to wonder if they have approached Mike Flanagan, who just wrote and directed Doctor Sleep. Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) was also once rumoured to be directing a feature film called Overlook Hotel that seems like it may have been the original incarnation of this project.

As for Justice League Dark, this is a project that has been rumoured as a possible movie for years now with both Doug Liman and Guillermo Del Toro involved in the past. The exact line-up is still unknown but some of the characters likely to appear include John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Zatanna and Doctor Mist. This would join a couple of Greg Berlanti-produced live-action DC shows on HBO Max including Green Lantern and Strange Adventures. Are you looking forward to any of these upcoming HBO Max shows?

I was very interested in the Overlook series, until I read the premise. Gonna be a pass for me.

By the way, does King hold the record for the most properties based on his writings? It’s gotta be him or Shakespeare, right?
