After the breakout success of Chronicle, Josh Trank was on a path to big things in Hollywood, landing a gig directing Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot and a Star Wars spin-off. But Fantastic Four ended up being a critical and commercial disappointment and Trank soon left the Star Wars project amidst rumours that he had actually been fired. Whatever happened, Trank is looking to bounce back with his next film, a biopic based on the final years of Al Capone. Tom Hardy plays the notorious gangster as he suffers from dementia and is forced to reckon with his violent past and although it looks like something that could go very wrong, Hardy has pulled off similar things before (see his double performance in Legend, for example). The movie was supposed to get a theatrical release but in light of the current situation the distributor is releasing it on VOD early instead. Capone arrives on May 12th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
