#blackAF Trailer Starring Kenya Barris and Rashida Jones

With Black-ish currently in its sixth season on ABC and having spawned a pair of spin-offs (Grown-ish and Mixed-ish), series creator Kenya Barris is stepping away to launch a new show on Netflix. He is also starring in the show as a fictionalized version of himself with Rashida Jones playing his wife. #blackAF will tackle “parenting, relationships, race, and culture” and “looks to pull the curtain back and reboot the ‘family sitcom’ in a way we’ve never seen before.” It is shot in a mockumentary style that resembles Modern Family but it also has a bit of a Curb Your Enthusiasm vibe with Barris’ real-life celebrity friends apparently showing up from time to time. #blackAF arrives on Netflix on April 17th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.

It’ll have one season tops. Shows like Atlanta can tackle all sorts of racial and cultural issues with cleverness and nuance. This just seems to primarily have the same brand of humour of something like Soul Plane where all of the “jokes” revolve around how black people do things compared to white people.

I have never gotten through the first season of any show that opts for the mockumentary style. It’s just not my cup of tea.
