Two more major theatrical releases have announced that they will be hitting VOD early with Pixar’s Onward getting a surprise release on digital platforms later today and the Ben Affleck high school basketball drama The Way Back expected to arrive next week. For Onward, Disney is also reportedly planning an early release on Disney+ as well. Although neither film really got a fair shake at the box office, they are two of the more favourably reviewed films that were playing in theatres prior to the COVID-19 shutdown. Here is a statement from Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group:
“With audiences largely unable to view films in theatrical release under current circumstances, we have decided to provide the alternative of early digital ownership of our currently released titles to people looking for great entertainment options. So, while we remain big fans of the theatrical experience and hope audiences are able to return to cinemas in the near future, we understand that these are challenging times and offering this option simply makes sense.”
Onward will be available to buy digitally beginning today at 5:00PM PST / 8:00PM EST while The Way Back will arrive this Tuesday March 24th. Meanwhile Onward will hit Disney+ on April 3rd. Coincidentally, Disney+ is currently gearing up to launch in the U.K. on March 24th although it is unclear if it will be available there on April 3rd as well. Do you plan on checking out either of these movies in the near future?
