With most movie theatres currently shut down across North America, Sony’s Bloodshot is one of several movies having its theatrical run cut off abruptly less than a week after it hit theatres. The movie has earned just $24 million worldwide which is not a great start for a movie that they are positioning as the first of many Valiant Comics adaptations. We already heard that Universal will release The Hunt on VOD this weekend and now Sony is opting for an early digital strategy as well with Bloodshot. They did, however, make a statement clarifying that they still support theatrical windows moving forward. Here’s what Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman had to say:
“Sony Pictures is firmly committed to theatrical exhibition and we support windowing. This is a unique and exceedingly rare circumstance where theaters have been required to close nationwide for the greater good and Bloodshot is abruptly unavailable in any medium. Audiences will now have the chance to own Bloodshot right away and see it at home, where we are all spending more time. We are confident that — like other businesses hit hard by the virus — movie theaters will bounce back strongly, and we will be there to support them.”
Bloodshot will be available for purchase digitally this coming Tuesday. It sounds like it will not be available for rental, at least initially, which is the opposite of what Universal is doing with The Hunt, The Invisible Man and Emma. Are you planning on checking out Bloodshot on VOD?
