Hollywood has lost one of the all-time greats this week as the family of Max von Sydow has announced that he passed away on Sunday at his home in France. The Swedish-French actor is best known for his collaborations with Ingmar Bergman (including The Seventh Seal) and for playing Father Merrin in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist but he has appeared in so many memorable films throughout his 70 year career. Most recently he had appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones; his final performance will be Nicholas Dimitropoulos’ upcoming film Echoes of the Past. He was 90 years old.

Max Von Sydow studied acting at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm where he first appeared in a pair of films by Alf Sjöberg, before moving to Malmö where he worked with Ingmar Bergman, the chief director of the Malmö City Theatre. They would go on to make 11 films together, primarily throughout the ’50s and ’60s, including The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and The Magician. Eventually Hollywood came calling and after turning down roles in Dr. No and The Sound of Music, Von Sydow would agree to play Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told.

From here, he would go on to appear in such films as The Quiller Memorandum, Three Days of the Condor, Flash Gordon, The Exorcist, Conan the Barbarian, Dune, Hannah and Her Sisters and, yes, Strange Brew. He often played villains and later got a chance to return to James Bond franchise, playing Blofeld in Never Say Never Again. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he appeared in some of the biggest movies of his career including including Minority Report, Shutter Island, Rush Hour 3 and Robin Hood and earned his second Oscar nomination for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. What are your favourite Max von Sydow performances?

Absolute legend. When I got into Bergman, I of course got exposed to him and his talent. RIP.

the right moment for me to point out that the Y is not pronounced like in english (and neither is the W), so it’s more like “seedoff”. R.I.P.

I definitely have to revisit Wild Strawberries. Completely forgot he was in Flash Gordon although I watched it five times in the theater.. Go, Flash, Go.
