The TIFF Midnight Madness Award may not carry the same prestige as the overall People’s Choice Award, but it has still given a boost to some great films over the years including The Raid and What We Do in the Shadows. Last year’s winner was a Spanish sci-fi thriller called The Platform and it puts forth a pretty intriguing concept: a dystopian vertically-stacked prison where inmates are fed by a platform containing food that descends from level to level. Theoretically, there is enough food on the platform to feed everyone, but as the people at the top keep taking more than their fair share, a violent revolt starts to build. Director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia makes his feature debut here with a dark and provocative satire that has been compared to Snowpiercer and High-Rise. The Platform arrives on Netflix on March 20th; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
