Monday Morning Box Office Report: Onward Wins with Uncharacteristically Weak Pixar Debut

Pixar’s Onward easily topped the box office over the weekend, although it wasn’t necessarily a huge hit by Pixar standards. The movie earned an estimated $40 million, which is the second lowest Pixar opening weekend since A Bug’s Life (The Good Dinosaur had $39 million back in 2015). Clearly Pixar’s original films aren’t pulling in the same numbers as their sequels these days, but there was also the coronavirus factor not to mention the fact that a lot of people thought this movie looked like a Dreamworks production. The Invisible Man dropped to second, taking a decent $15.2 million in its second weekend, while The Way Back opened in third with $8.5 million. Sonic the Hedgehog added another $8 million (it has now earned $295 million worldwide) while The Call of the Wild rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere Emma jumped into the top 10 after going nationwide and both Impractical Jokers: The Movie and My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising also managed to stay in the top 10 for the second week in a row.
