James Wan to Produce a New Universal Monster Movie

Universal no longer appears to have a cohesive master plan for their reboot of the Universal Monsters franchise, but the recent box office success of Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man seems to prove that audiences are perfectly fine with that. Their A-list action-oriented Dark Universe imploded after just one movie and now they are taking a more thrifty, filmmaker-driven approach. Several other movies, some reboots and some original properties, are currently being lined up by directors that include Dexter Fletcher, Paul Feig and Elizabeth Banks. Now James Wan is adding a project that list, although he probably won’t be directing it himself. Hit the jump for more info.

According to THR, James Wan is teaming up with Robbie Thompson, a long-time writer and producer for Supernatural, to develop a brand new Universal Monster movie. It is said to be a modern take on a classic monster story and it is being compared to the 2007 Shia LaBeouf film Disturbia for some reason. The plot revolves around a group of teens who discover that a neighbour is building a monster in his basement.

Thompson is writing the script while James Wan will produce through his Atomic Monster company. Thompson is also currently writing for Netflix’s upcoming King Arthur reimagining series Cursed and was previously working an underwater adventure movie for Michael Bay. It will be interesting to see if this movie ends up being an original movie in the vein of Paul Feig’s Dark Army or if it will actually be framed as a Frankenstein reboot. Are you looking forward to another modern take on a classic Universal monster?
