Matt Reeves Shares First Photos of the New Batmobile

As production continues on The Batman in the U.K., director Matt Reeves is continuing to offer occasional updates via social media to keep fans involved. Last month he released a camera test showing Robert Pattinson in the new suit and now this month he has unveiled some photos of the new Batmobile. As it turns out, Batman’s new ride kind of resembles something out of a Fast & Furious movie… which is to say it is more muscle car than armoured tank, moving back towards the ’60s Batmobile and away from the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan versions. It’s actually one of the most realistic, toned down Batmobiles we’ve ever seen on screen, which may be an early indication of the overall approach this movie is taking. You can also see the new Batsuit from a few different angles in the photos as well. The Batman hits theatres on June 5th, 2021; check out the photos after the jump and let us know what you think.

Looks pretty slick, but I’m not sure I need the batmobile to be “realistic”. Still liking a lot of what I’ve seen so far with this though. Has it ever been confirmed to be set in the 90s?

    This movie looks like shit.

Best Batcar since Adam West’s. I’m in.

The drive for realism in Batman is the exact wrong approach to take to the material. There is a reason that Arkham Asylum is the most well known institution in Gotham. Batman movies should be insane, and Batman should potentially be the most insane character in the film. That would make a good Batman movie. Batman Returns works the best in this regard, where at one point, Bruce Wayne worries that Selina Kyle is going to think of him as
“a Norman Bates, Ted Bundy type.” Batman needs more of the Gothic and the Edgar Allan Poe to work correctly. A film where Batman is the villain and some regular every-man — maybe a private investigator — has to stop him would be optimal. Anyway, there is nothing more laughable than realistic, gritty Batman.

I like it. It kinda reminds me of the Neal Adams Batmobile from the 70’s comics. My uncle had a huge collection of comics from the 70’s and 80’s so I got a chance to read them.

I don’t think this is the final incarnation though. From what I heard this early suit and Batmobile are just the early versions. He gets upgraded later in the movie. Liking the vibe so far, but we’ll see.

I’ve got it. Batman as the leader of an evil cult. Now that would be a Batman movie.

I saw the 1960s Batmobile in the 80s at the Buffalo (NY) Auto Show. It was gloriously plastic-y and cheap looking, but I loved it.

And long. Can’t imagine driving that boat in my hood.
