Antonio Banderas Joins Uncharted, Ruben Fleischer Takes Over as Director

Despite being a revolving door for writers and directors over the past decade, Sony’s Uncharted movie looks like it is finally about to happen. No, for real this time. Tom Holland recently teased that the production is scheduled to start this month and we are hearing that the project has officially nailed down a new director to replace Travis Knight. In addition to that, several new cast members have been announced for supporting roles, which is always a strong indicator that they are about to start shooting. Among the list of actors joining the project is recent Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Variety, Antonio Banderas has joined Sony’s Uncharted in an unspecified role along with Sophia Ali (Truth or Dare, Grey’s Anatomy) and Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). The obvious assumption is that Banderas will play a villain opposite Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg although the others are less clear; we don’t know if the movie will feature a younger version of Elena, Chloe or Nadine (or if Nathan Drake’s older brother Sam will be involved for that matter). From what we have heard, the movie seems to be drawing from some of the flashbacks in Uncharted 3 and 4 with Tom Holland obviously playing a younger version of Drake.

Ruben Fleischer is now confirmed to be directing the movie after being previously rumoured as the top candidate to take over. He has a strong working relationship with Sony after having helmed Venom and the Zombieland movies. The latest draft of the script was written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man, Men in Black: International) and the movie is scheduled to hit theatres on March 5th, 2021. Are you looking forward to Uncharted?
