M.A.S.K. Movie Gets a Screenwriter

A live-action movie based on the ’80s toy line and animated series M.A.S.K. is taking one step closer to becoming a reality this week as Paramount and Hasbro have reportedly found a screenwriter for the project. The movie has been in development for years now with it originally being planned as part of a so-called Hasbro Cinematic Universe that would also include G.I. Joe, Visionaries, Micronauts and ROM. While that seems to have faded away along with most other cinematic universes in Hollywood, the good news is that M.A.S.K. is now being prepped as a standalone movie. F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious) signed on to direct back in 2018 and now writer Chris Bremner’s wristwatch has flashed the alert signal as they continue to assemble a team of agents best suited for this mission. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, Chris Bremner will write M.A.S.K. for Paramount and Hasbro. Bremner just wrote the script for the successful Bad Boys for Life and is also writing the fourth film in that series plus he is also attached to pen National Treasure 3 for Disney. M.A.S.K. originally revolved around a team of specialists with transforming vehicles and uniquely-powered masks fighting a similarly-equipped splinter group of terrorists known as V.E.N.O.M. It is unclear if how much they plan to tweak the premise but at one point it was being described as “a contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle.”
A few years back, it was rumoured that the third G.I. Joe movie would introduce some of the M.A.S.K. characters, positioning it as a spin-off franchise. Paramount recently wrapped production on the G.I. Joe spin-off movie Snake Eyes starring Henry Golding, but as far as we know the two big screen franchises will no longer be connected. Are you looking forward to a M.A.S.K. movie?
