Correction: Skate Kitchen is not a documentary.
If you’ve been missing Lena Dunham’s Girls ever since the final episode aired a few years ago, HBO is about to debut a new series that seems like it might be a worthy successor. Based on the 2018
documentary film Skate Kitchen, the show is called Betty and it revolves around a group of five female skateboarders navigating life in New York City. It is co-created by Skate Kitchen director Crystal Moselle, who also directed the documentary The Wolfpack, and Lesley Arfin, who was a writer on Girls and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and also co-created Love with Paul Rust. What is perhaps most interesting, however, is the fact that the five women in Skate Kitchen are also the lead actors in the show. The first season of Betty consists of six half-hour episodes and premieres on May 1st; check out the trailer below and see what you think.
