The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Team Up for The Curse

Ever since Nathan for You wrapped up in 2017 with the epic feature-length finale “Finding Frances”, fans have been eagerly awaiting Nathan Fielder’s next project. He directed a couple of episodes of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who is America? series for Showtime but mostly he has been developing some new shows for HBO, where he recently signed an overall deal (one of those shows is How To… with John Wilson, which he will executive produce). Now this week we are learning that Fielder has another project in the works with Uncut Gems writing / directing duo Benny and Josh Safdie. What could these guys possibly be cooking up together? Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Deadline, Showtime has greenlit a pilot for The Curse, a half-hour comedy series from The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder. The show is written by Fielder and Benny Safdie and revolves around an alleged curse that comes between a newly married couple who star in an HGTV show called Flipanthropy. Fielder and Benny Safdie will both star as well with Fielder playing the husband and Safdie playing the producer of the HGTV show.

Given Fielder’s history of lampooning reality TV, it stands to reason that The Curse may unfold entirely in the style of a fictional home renovation show. The premise seems to be drawing from the story of real-life HGTV stars Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead, who ended up splitting after their TV series Flip or Flop took off. Although the original plan was for The Safdies to direct the show, that no longer seems to be the case. They will both executive produce, however, along with Fielder. Are you looking forward to The Curse?
