Taika Waititi to Direct Hollywood Satire TV Series The Auteur

Fresh off of his Best Adapted Screenplay win for Jojo Rabbit at the Oscars, this week we are getting our first details about a new project in development from Taika Waititi that, ironically enough, looks to skewer Hollywood. The project is a half-hour limited series for Showtime called The Auteur, and it will star Jude Law as a big time producer who takes desperate measures after his last movie bombs at the box office. It is described as a “gonzo horror-comedy, a twisted romance and a glamorous, high wire act of biting satire” and it is based on the 2014 graphic novel by Rick Spears, James Callahan and Luigi Anderson. Here is the plot synopsis for the graphic novel:

“Fresh off the biggest bomb in Hollywood history, producer Nathan T. Rex enters a downward spiral of drugs and depravity in a quest to resurrect his career and save his soul. Over budget and behind schedule on PRESIDENTS DAY, he is backed into a corner by bad publicity, a crap project, and studio politics. But enlisting serial-killer-turned-murder-consultant Darwin, his trusty assistant Igor, narcotics from Doctor Love, and the lovely actress Coconut, T. Rex will stop at nothing in his quest for cinematic fame and glory. God help us all.”

Waititi will co-write with Peter Warren (Ghost Team) and is attached to direct the pilot but directing other episodes is up in the air due to his packed schedule. He is currently in post-production on Next Goal Wins and will next direct Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel and a Time Bandits pilot for Apple plus he has an unspecified acting role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Showtime has already ordered multiple scripts of The Auteur, which is a strong indication that they plan to fully commit to the series. Are you looking forward to The Auteur?

I like his works since What We Do in the Shadows up to the present. I think this type of work suits him well.
