2020 Independent Spirit Award Winners

spiritawards2020winners.jpg

After years of increasing overlap between the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards, this year the Spirit Awards functioned a lot more as they were originally intended: as an alternative awards ceremony that honours a very different group of films. If you were upset that Uncut Gems, The Farewell and The Lighthouse were almost completely overlooked by the Oscars, you’ll be happy to see that they did win a bunch of Spirit Awards on Saturday night. The Safdies won Best Director and Adam Sandler got Best Male Lead while The Farewell took home Best Feature. Willem Dafoe won for Best Supporting Male and Marriage Story got the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble. That being said, there were still a few repeats including Parasite for Best International Film. Check out the full list of Independent Spirit Award nominees and winners after the jump and let us know what you think.

Glad to see Sandler won, but still bummed he didn’t get the Oscar nom. I’d like to think we’ll see more performances from him like this, but then I hear he’s just signed a new Netflix deal worth 250 million. Something tells me those ones won’t be like Uncut Gems…
