Disney+ Obi-Wan Series Reportedly Put on Hold

We’ve got more behind-the-scenes drama coming out of Lucasfilm this week as yet another Star Wars project has reportedly hit a snag. With future plans for the feature film franchise still up in the air, the next project on the horizon was the Obi-Wan series for Disney+. Production was expected to start this year with Ewan McGregor returning to the role and casting was said to have been underway for supporting roles. Now, however, we are hearing that the show has been put on hold indefinitely with the crew at Pinewood Studios in London being sent home. Hit the jump for more details.
The news was originally reported by Collider with the reason for the delay being primarily script issues. Kathleen Kennedy was apparently not happy with the story and asked for it to be completely reworked while still hoping to reassemble the crew once again this summer. THR has since reported that screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive) has been let go and a search is underway for new writers with an eye on reshaping it from six episodes down to four.
From what we know, the story was going to revolve around Obi-Wan protecting a young Luke and possibly a young Leia, but there were concerns it might be a bit too similar to The Mandalorian. Deborah Chow, who helmed two episodes of The Mandalorian, is still expected to direct and Ewan McGregor remains attached to star. Whether or not the mixed reception to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had anything to do with the increased scrutiny on the Obi-Wan scripts remains to be seen. Do you still have high hopes for the Obi-Wan TV series?
