Taika Waititi Rumoured for New Star Wars Movie

After the success of Thor: Ragnarok and now Jojo Rabbit (the latter of which has just earned 6 Oscar nominations), Taika Waititi’s career continues to soar. Marvel was eager to bring him back for Thor: Love and Thunder, but he also seems to have a lot of other projects on the go including his upcoming soccer movie Next Goal Wins, the live-action Akira movie and a pilot episode for Apple’s Time Bandits TV series, not to mention acting gigs in Free Guy and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Now we are hearing that Disney also wants to pull him over to their other most valuable franchise, a universe that he has already dabbled in on the small screen: Star Wars. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to THR, Disney and Lucasfilm recently approached Taika Waititi about developing a brand new Star Wars movie. It sounds like the discussions are still extremely early and it is unclear whether this would be a project for theatrical release or for Disney+. Disney’s plans for upcoming Star Wars movies in general are still somewhat unclear; Rian Johnson is developing a new trilogy and Kevin Feige was brought on board to produce an unspecified project, while David Benioff and D.B. Weiss dropping out of a planned trilogy that they were working on last year.

Waititi directed the finale of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and also appeared as the droid IG-11, so he already has a working relationship with Lucasfilm. He has also worked with Kevin Feige obviously, so it is possible that he might be teaming up with him again here. Considering that The Mandalorian finale went over well with fans, Taika Waititi’s name could definitely generate some excitement for the future of Star Wars on the big screen. The real question is whether he would have time for such a thing. Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to hit theatres on Nov. 5th, 2021, so this would have to happen after that at the very earliest. Would you like to see Taika Waititi write and direct a new Star Wars movie?

Oooooh boy! As interesting as this might sound, will they attempt to muzzle him too?

Bummer, i’d rather he continued to make cool original movies than waste his time on this nonsense.

Don’t turn Taika into a jobber Hollyweird!

While I thought Thor: Ragnarok was great, the last episode of The Mandalorian was my least favorite of the series, I felt the director’s style was too strong and took over the material, changing it tonally to a degree that it didn’t fit with the rest of the show. But if they are going with a comedic Star Wars film from the get-go than it might work.

Hopefully not, because Waititi is one of the best filmmakers of the moment. No doubt it will make an excellent production and we can see it online

Soon to be a headline: Taika Waititi Leaves “Star Wars” Citing Creative Differences. Soon to be a headline after that: Taika Waititi Was Fired By Kathleen Kennedy Over Creative Differences. Soon to be a headline after that: Taika Waititi’s Idea For His “Star Wars” Better Than The Film We Got.
Seriously, at this point, Disney’s Lucasfilm should just avoid the “Hey, We Hired a Director with a Voice!” shtick and just go straight to the jobber hack they know they’ll eventually hire to replace them.

  • In Waititi’s case I doubt this would happen. He already worked on The Mandalorian, his Thor movie is considered the best of the three, a sequel greenlit – it seems like Waititi, similar to Gunn, can manage to wiggle as much as he feels necessary within the Disney straitjacket.

There should be a moratorium on ANY SW news until the day after the next film releases.
