Frank boldly states that his favorite films of the year are not nominated for oscars and then proceeds to list 5 Best Picture nominnes in his top ten of the year!?!?

  • Frank Booth

Chill, man, it’s just a bit.

    EVERYTHING. IS. A. BIT.

  • Lori Cerny

    Spoiler

Jay hates Keanu Reeves, but gives John Wick 3 an honorable mention?!?

  • tyler mikol

I recently rewatched Midsommar Too Frankie, and It worked so much more For me on that 2nd viewing. I love it. And today during dinner time I watched the Chris Watts video. That’s just quality content.

  • Jay Cheel

    I hate Keanu Reeves?

  • devolutionary

In case anyone wants a full comprehensive list of their Top 10 Films of 2019 + Junkies Award noms/winners, I’ve posted them here. (P.S.: Sorry about the ads)
    https://shrib.com/#FilmJunk2019Awards

Wish I could’ve caught Uncut Gems, Birds of Passage, and Monos in time, meh.

  • devolutionary

It was Frank’s hate for his overexposure, which I still think is unfounded.

  • hamslime

RE: Desperate Comedian Award Nominees – Jake Gyllenhaal was in Bubble Boy, Jiminy Glick in Lalawood, and his first acting credit on IMBD was City Slickers. Don’t know if that moves the needle one way or another but… that happened.

  • Indianamcclain

I got to check out 1917 near the beginning of December with zero hype, zero award nominations and I absolutely loved it. I hope the hubbub with the Golden Globes and the Oscars doesn’t cause people to judge it too harshly.

  • Beat_C

he was referring to the films at the very top.

  • Beat_C

just wanted to say THANK YOU for another year of prim FJ content. this episode was the cherry on top.

  • Ben Bueno

Didn’t really know anything about 1917, went it blind and absolutely loved it. I didn’t fixate on the one-shot gimmick at all, and personally, I really enjoyed the camera movement throughout, it didn’t take me out of the experience whatsoever. My only gripe was with the soundtrack’s occasional takeover of scenes, I think a more minimal soundtrack, or no soundtrack at all could’ve worked better. But I really loved it overall. It’s my favorite cinema experience since Blade Runner 2049

  • Ben Bueno

Oh and, this movie was WAY better than Dunkirk

  • stevens1

Just a random question for the FJ team – over the years I’ve always heard you talk about buying new TVs, but has anyone ever thought about buying a projector?

  • OsoDuck

Now we know why Jay is radioactive.

  • That still makes no sense to me and Frank has refused to acknowledge the controversy. I believe Frank’s quote was something along the lines of “He’s everywhere the past year.”

He was in four titles. In three of those titles, he was in it for a total screen time of maybe 15 minutes combined. He was in no shorts, no commercials, no TV and no videos. Next year he is in one video game.

Meanwhile, Florence Pugh was arguably the lead in three feature length movies.

  • The idea of no soundtrack for 1917 is an interesting one. I think that would’ve made the movie a lot more immersive than it was. The score was kind of the antithesis to the one-shot gimmick… which doesn’t really work at all for me.

  • Ben Bueno

Sure, I could see that. Nothing really broke the immersion for me personally, soundtrack included, but I get why for some people some aspects didn’t click 100%. I don’t know, maybe it was because I wasn’t really expecting anything from it that I ended up enjoying it so much. Not a lot of art-house stuff comes out where I live, we mostly get movies like this, so most of the time you come in with a general idea of what the movie will end up being, and I’m so happy that I can still be surprised every once in a while.

  • Indianamcclain

I don’t know why they need to be compared. They’re both very different from each other and they don’t even take place in the same war.

  • RockJoker

will there be a post with your guys top films of 2019?

  • He still has Tarantino on #4 with 10 nominations and Marriage Story on #3 with 6. I agree with Frank Booth below: 95% of what Frank says is a bit nowadays.

For example him stating that Shaft will never be more than a 3.5 at around the 1:49:29 mark, yet he logged his rewatch on December 28th with 4 stars.

Frank needs an additional nickname: The Bit Baron.

  • Jake

Jay mentioned he wanted to have one at some point. I can’t recall which episode it was but I remember it being discussed, but only briefly.

  • Sean

Yep I’ll try to post that soon

  • Sean

Not really, it always seemed more trouble that it is worth and also more expensive although I’ve heard 4K projectors are finally affordable.

  • Nic

Now that we’re in the new decade, Frankie finally in possession of an OLED and back in the (4k) blu-ray game and Jay more into boutique labels than ever, could it be time for another blu-ray manifesto episode?
It’s been more than three years since the last one and a lot has changed since then! I would really like to hear your thoughts on where you think physical media will go in the 2020s and what the future holds for collecters like us. The love for blu-ray and physical media in general has always been one of my favorite things about FJ and I (and I’m sure many other listeners as well) could listen to Jay talk about Vinegar Syndrome for hours. I would love to get a ranking of your favorite blu ray labels right now and some discussion about your current buying habits (it seems like Sean is the closest to going digital right now?).
Also, as always, thanks for another great year of content and for keeping the show going. Greatly looking forward to your best of the decade show next week!

  • I assume Frank meant in general. There was a time when Keanu was dominating Twitter, be it because he knows how to decently be photographed with female fans or when his plane I believe was grounded and he organized a bus for/with the other passengers.

  • Zac

Had a chance to see the director’s cut of Midsommar in early August, and I think I prefer the theatrical cut. There are a couple added sequences of interest, but mostly the cut just creates some pacing issues and really hammers home that the boyfriend is an enormous tool. 4k > Director’s Cut.

  • devolutionary

Apparently #unfitbit is a meme on Twitter, lol.

  • Ben Bueno

Well, the guys brought it up in the podcast. Plus, why not?

  • Sam

Yeah, for a little bit, Keanu Reeves was getting the Bill Murray type treatment. A few of my co-workers who aren’t movie fans in general “love” Keanu Reeves too. Doesn’t bother me personally, but I can kinda see what Frank was talking about.

  • Sam

Maybe I should rewatch Midsommar again myself. Didn’t crack my top 25 that I make every year. Was on the fence with Us as well, gave that a rewatch and ulimately decided against putting it in my top 25, felt Midsommar might be the same, but maybe I should give it another try.

  • Jonny Ashley

any urls to these best content noms?

  • Nic

I would also appreciate this. Maybe someone could do a YT playlist

  • Rolf

I don’t know if I should find Frank’s ignorance of foreign language films amusing, sad or just stupid. Probably all of those. I predict there won’t be any foreign language film in the decade list either. Still love the KoC. And Jay’s list.

  • Rolf

Please do. I need to know the title of Jay’s #9 (?) pick: the one about guerillas taking a hostage.

  • Stevie P

    Monos

  • Rolf

    Ah, thank you, Stevie P!

  • Sam

Yeah, Jay pronounces it as Manos though which it should be more like “Moe-nos” though I guess that could be another Krampus thing about regional dialect. But on other podcasts they also pronounce it like Manos and I keep thinking they’re talking about Hands of Fate.

  • Ben Bueno

It should be “Moh-nos” not “Moe” though, It’s in Spanish

  • gibson8

The fact you don’t know how to feel about Frank’s ignorance explains why you like him????

  • gibson8

Fuck the bit. Heres to your fuck, Frank.!
